Description
A Ginkgo that dares to be different, ‘Weeping Wonder’ is a slow -growing dwarf with the classic fan-shaped leaves but on an irregular weeping form with branches that can go in any direction and weeping branchlets. It does have a better weeping habit than other weeping cultivars. As with other Ginkgo, the leaves turn brilliant golden-yellow with the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall. The leaves are fewer but thicker than other cultivars. An oddity that captures attention year round, even after dropping its leaves in late fall to expose the interesting branches and bark color. Because this is a more recent introduction we’re not sure exactly the ultimate size, but the tree in our gardens has reached 6 feet tall by 3 feet wide in about 10 years. Very easy-to-grow, extremely long-lived and adding maybe 6 to 8 inches in size per year, Weeping Wonder makes for a unique specimen to show off in smaller garden spaces or containers.
Landscape & Garden Uses Â
Growing slowly to an estimate of around 10 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, the Weeping Wonder Dwarf Ginkgo is ideal for growing in containers or as an accent tree in small garden spaces and home foundation plantings. Also excellent for rock gardens. When planted near a patio or other outdoor living spaces it is sure to be a conversation piece!
Suggested Spacing:Â Best as a specimen
Growing Preferences
One of if not the easiest trees to grow, the Ginkgo adapts well to adverse growing conditions in urban areas. It is remarkably free of diseases, is insect resistant, and exceptionally drought tolerant when established. It adapts well to most soil types, even clay, and won’t be bothered by moist or dry soil conditions. Soil pH is of no concern as Ginkgo trees perform well in both acid and alkaline conditions. Weeping Wonder will grow in full sun to light shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Avoid pruning other than to remove damaged branches or lower branches to expose more trunk.
