Description
Corylopsis, commonly known as Winter Hazel, is lesser-known than other late winter to early spring flowering shrubs such as Forysthia and Quince, but we think it is a more beautiful and elegant shrub. Golden Spring Winter Hazel is extra special in that it’s leaves emerge bright yellow with rouge-red tinting turning to a golden-yellow in sun or a soft chartreuse to lime green in shade and finally to golden and orange shades in fall. Heralding the arrival of spring in late winter, LOADS of drooping racemes packed with fragrant, luminous soft yellow flowers appear along all the bare, zig-zagging stems before the leaves emerge. Growing to about six to 8 feet tall and wide, Golden Spring is a magnificent addition to a sunny or shady woodland border that will have you always looking forward to its glorious winter bloom.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 feet tall and 8 to equally feet wide in a rounded mound, Golden Spring Winter Hazel is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in sun or shade. We think it looks best in woodland gardens and borders and around outdoor living spaces and sitting areas where the fragrant flowers and colorful foliage can be enjoyed from close up. A fine addition to yellow theme gardens, fragrance gardens, cottage gardens and woodland gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â Â 6 to 8 feet apart for solid hedge; Â 10 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Golden Spring Winter Hazel performs well in both full sun or full shade and everything between. Though leaves emerge yellow in sun or shade, during summer they will be more yellow with more sun and chartreuse to lime green in shade. It prefers an organically rich, acidic, moist but well-drained soil. We mulch plants before summer arrives to help conserve moisture. That said, ‘Golden Spring’ is a Corylopsis spicata which are known to be more drought tolerant.Â
