Description
Sure to be a conversation piece in the garden, the Gilt Edge Toad Lily is a beautiful and very easy-to-grow addition to shady areas. Plant it in the ground or in pots close to patios and other outdoor sitting areas where the exotic, orchid-like, sparkling jewel-toned flowers with white infused violet purple petals with deep purple spots can be enjoyed from up close. Each flower features six showy tepals; 3 inner petals and 3 outer sepals which are similar in appearance. The flowers bloom from late summer through fall attracting butterflies and other beneficial pollinators and are great for cutting and display in your favorite vase. What’s more, Gilt Edge displays lovely variegated green leaves with cream to chartreuse borders on upright stems in a clump that will light up the shade garden.
In case you were wondering where the name “toad lily” came from, the name refers to flowers being spotted like toads and having warty, sac-like bumps which are the nectaries.Â

Growing Preferences
Toad Lily is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and full shade or part shade. Avoid direct afternoon sun which can scald leaves. It prefers a consistently moist, humusy, organically rich soil. Keep an eye on plants growing in containers and provide water if you see the foliage begin to wilt. Feed in spring and again in early summer with a natural or organic plant food such as Espoma Plant-Tone.
