Description
The foliage of Nandina turns red only during the winter, right? Well, not anymore…at least not with the new Flirt Dwarf Nandina. Unlike many other nandina varieties which are green throughout the warm season and turn red in winter, Flirt, a sport of N. domestica ‘Harbour Dwarf’, produces stunning red new growth during the spring, summer and fall! Then, during winter it goes almost completely reddish-maroon. So now you can have splashes of outstanding red color year round in the landscape! In spring, pretty panicles of white flowers rise above the low mounds of red foliage. That said, Flirt Nandina is sterile, which means it will not spread from seed.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 2 feet tall and 1.5-2 feet wide, the Flirt Nandina is an excellent choice for stunning groupings or mass plantings in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Also ideal for use to line walkways and paths. Makes a fine accent in container gardens and is a nice addition to rock gardens, red theme gardens, and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Spacing:  18 inches apart for mass plantings;  4 feet or more apart for space between plants

How Many Plants Needed To Cover A Planting Area?
Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Nandina variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Flirt Nandina is exceptionally easy to grow in most any average, moist but well drained soils and full sun to part shade. Plants are exceptionally drought tolerant when established. As with so many other shrubs, constantly wet or soggy can cause root rot and other plant diseases. Exceptionally low maintenance requiring little if any pruning. Its low water needs makes it highly suitable for Xeriscape gardening.

My vibinum had outgrown the large pots in the front of my house and I was looking for plants that wouldn’t grow too large and would be able to handle the afternoon sun. I also wanted something attractive to complement the landscaping.
The plants came well packaged and with no damage and I always consider that a big plus! They were very healthy and I was very hopeful these would be the answer to my problem. They are now doing very well in those big pots and are already sprouting new foliage.
I would definitely buy from Wilson Bros again!———————————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG

I chose these mini Flirt nandinas to provide landscape color. Although I live in a land of fall color, there are no maples on my lot because the hillside soil is rocky and dry. I placed the nandina against a berm that I created to collect rain runoff at the edge of the driveway, on its way down the hillside of my sloping lot, Our soil is so rocky that my husband actually had to use a pick axe to loosen the soil, and create the berm. But we know from experience that nandina, with just a little care with some soil amendments, and extra starting water, will thrive where other plants eventually give up. Further down the hill are some natural post oaks growing among the rocks, so the nandina will get some afternoon shade in the summers. I finally expect to have a little ‘mountain color’ in my south-sloping, dry, rocky yard! Because I needed so many of these little tykes, Wilson collected them from their various growing facilities. And they were worth the wait. They arrived in fabulous condition, fresh from their fields, in good health. The little guys, in just one week, are already thriving in the brisk mornings and warm fall afternoons. ————————– WBG Reply: Hi Tamara – Thanks so much for providing your review of the Flirt Nandina and we hope you enjoy them for years to come. Everything from ordering to getting the Nandinas was excellent. Your answers to questions and customer service was just what I expected – very good. The plants arrived in very fine condition with excellent root systems (important to me) they look good where they are planted. I am looking forward to ordering more when we get some Raphiolepsis cleared out. ——————- WBG Reply: Hi John – Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review and for the compliments. This shrub is hard to find but well worth the price. Shipped right away by Wilson Bros. Gardens and packaged so it was not damaged in transit which is often a problem with other companies.
I have the Firepower nandina but was really interested in Flirt because it has the red leaves during the spring and summer instead of during the winter. The red leaves aren’t as loud as Firepower, but they are a very nice deep burgundy red, which happens to match the shutters on my house. I planted them in a patch to go around under a green Japanese maple. They really look nice. I was impressed with the way the plants were packed and there was no damage to any of the plants during shipping. Will buy more plants from Wilson Bros Gardens in spring.
