Description
A must have plant for eccentric gardeners who love eccentric plants like we do, Ozothamnus coralloides, commonly called Coral Shrub, is a cushion-forming evergreen shrub reaching 1 foot tall and slowly spready to 2 to 3 feet wide. It features thick stems with diamond-shaped deep green leaves that are held tight against the stem so that all you’re really seeing is the backside of the leaf. The leaves are edged with dense, snow-like woolly hairs giving the plant an unusual coral-like look. The plant produces soft yellow flowers at the ends of stems, however they are sunken amongst the leaves so are interesting but not very showy. Distinct, unusual, and a fantastically extraordinary oddity, the Coral Shrub is sure to be an attraction and conversation piece in the garden. Best grown in full sun to light shade and most any type of well-drained soil.
The Coral Shrub plant comes from New Zealand’s South Island where it is an uncommon sub-alpine species found in the Kaikoura Ranges southeast of the Marlborough Strait.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 1 foot tall and slowly to 2 to 3 feet wide at maturity, the Coral Shrub is ideal for use as a specimen in small garden spaces or groupings in larger spaces. It is a fine addition rock gardens, oddity gardens and Asian themed gardens.
Spacing Recommendations:Â 4 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Coral shrub is easy to grow and virtually no maintenance. It is easy to grow in most any moist but well drained soil of average fertility and full sun to light shade. It does not like a constantly soggy or wet soil. It isn’t picky about soil pH, thriving in acid, neutral or alkaline conditions. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for best performance. No pruning will be necessary unless to remove a damaged stem to tidy the plant
